A Reaching Deeper Workshop

Thursday-Saturday, June 12-14, 2008, 10AM-4PM

at

CROSSROADS ART CENTER, 2016 Staples Mill Road, Richmond, VA

Brenda Bickerstaff-Stanley is a native of Richmond, Va.  She began painting in her early years in college and found it so intriguing that she never looked back to her other studies.  Seeking out the unique flavor of different cultures, Brenda transforms places into colorful and lively images.  Her travels have taken her to South Africa, Italy, France, the Caribbean Islands, Key West, New Orleans, and Mexico where she has kept walking journals of the landscapes and people.

Brenda is a colorist and her paintings speak of this form of expression.  “If I had only one color …it would be red!  How wonderful it is that I am able to find my life’s work through painting”.

Painting in both watercolor and acrylics allows Brenda to explore a subject through color washes on paper or full body strokes on canvas.  This enthusiasm is passed on to her students in her more than 25 years of teaching workshops locally and worldwide.

Brenda belongs to the Virginia Watercolor Society and Metro Richmond Artists Association.  She exhibits her works both locally at Crossroads Art Center and in numerous shows throughout the United States.

Lose the Photo/Find the Painting

Day 1: Brenda will demo a contour drawing of flowers and use watercolors in her painting. We will all work from photos we have brought with us (extras will be available).    However, you may paint landscapes, still life, flowers, or other images at any time during the workshop and in watercolor or acrylics.  This first day will be spent painting fairly realistically, or in your normal style.  Brenda will spend most of her time working with you.

Day 2:  Let’s branch out.  How do you want to paint?  Taking the painting from Day 1 we will begin to interpret our work, rather than painting what we see.  No photos allowed!  This will move us towards that loose and juicy look we hear so much about.

Day 3:  Let’s really play with our painting.  We will need to bring magazines with us that have BIG pictures, no catalogues.  We will mix the media we are using.  Acrylics, watercolors, brushes, glue, crayons, pencils, etc.   Bring your usual painting supplies and the workshop will provide the rest.
