Cary Philbrick is a member of the Professional Photographers of America and Virginia Professional Photographers Association. He became interested in the technique of etching after viewing the works of artist David Hunter at a gallery in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
After trying traditional etching techniques that proved to be messy, caustic, and environmentally unsafe, Cary began exploring other options. Cary found an internet article on an environmentally safe process called Solarplate and a Santa Fe workshop that taught the process.
Presented by Santa Fe artist Don Messec, the workshop revealed an extraordinary process that creates an etching plate using only ultraviolet light and water, with no environmentally unsafe residues — no more acid baths, caustic grounds, or hazardous fumes.
In addition to etchings, Cary creates manipulated photographs on canvas.
