The Center offers a multitude of art classes and seminars for all ages and learning levels. Both short and long term classes in varied forms of art and crafts will be offered throughout the year. Introduction to Drawing and Painting - 10 weeks

Learn the basics of drawing and painting in two 10-week semesters. There will be lots of demos and hands on experience.
Instructor's supplies can be used for a fee: First Semester - $45 supply fee

Approximate cost for first semester supplies if purchased is $95

Introduction to Pastels

Explore the exciting medium of soft pastels and learn how to get them to work for you in fun and supportive environment. Learn the tool needed, types of pastels available, use of different papers to create different effects and how to fix the finished masterpiece. Beginning watercolor is for those with some drawing experience who would like to add color dimension to their work. Instructions will include color mixing, principles of design, watercolor techniques and special effects. Still life setups will be provided or bring your own subject matter to paint. Learn basic tile setting and grouting techniques. Become familiar with different types of tile, glazes, adhesives, grouts and additives. You will leave with your very own finished Mosaic. No art or mosaic experience necessary. All materials will be supplied. Enrollment is limited to ensure a more personalized class. Tuition is $105 when working on a FLOWER POT & $120 when working on a TRAY.

Photoshop Elements: An Easy Beginner Class
David Everett, a long-standing professional photographer, and Christopher Wynn, a Richmond-based watercolorist and art director, will jointly be teaching a Photoshop Elements class. Between the two of them, they have well over 25 years professional experience in the Adobe Photoshop realm. The class is focused for those who wish to learn the rudiments of using, and manipulating, their digital images. This will be a fun, supportive, casually paced forum. Students will need to bring a laptop (either a PC or Mac) with Photoshop Elements software (preferably already loaded) that can easily be purchased at Costco for around $79.00 to the first class.

He will clearly demonstrate his method of kinetic painting, or mixing and rolling the color on paper to achieve realistic painting results. Christopher maintains a hands-on approach by personally demonstracting various other watercolor techniques in his class, as well as one-on-one attention to students. Three and four-Week Glass Class
This three-week and four-week course is all about learning the basics techniques of manipulating hot molten glass. Students will learn how to gather hot glass from a furnace, shape it, sculpt it, and blow it into desired forms. The workshop will cover how different tools such as stainless steel tools, wood blocks, and wet newspapers are used to shape the glass. We will have a small furnace of molten glass, two glory holes and an annealing oven. All tools and materials will be provided. This is an opportunity to have a unique experience and depart with a new understanding of glass as well as making some cool things to take home with you. There will be plenty to do and to learn. No experience required. All that is required is a lot of energy and a pair of sunglasses. Long sleeves and long pants are always a good idea too. 12 Students Max; 8 Minimum

CRASH COURSE

In this two-day crash course, students will learn the basics of glassblowing, from making glass flowers to blowing your first bubble in hot glass. . All tools and materials will be provided. This is an opportunity to have a unique experience and depart with a new understanding of glass as well as making some cool things to take home with you. No experience required.

Intermediate Photography: Getting the Most out of Your SLR Camera
Saturday September 25th 10a-5p

Want to gain more control over your photography? Learn to use your camera in the manual modes. Join me to demystify apertures and shutter speeds. Learn to use aperture priority to gain control over your depth of field. Understand shutter priority and when to use it. Finally understand the manual mode and how to make correct exposure decisions. After I explain the concept with lecture, each student will practice various shooting exercises to reinforce the concepts. Learn hands on to gain more control over your camera. This class is for digital SLR camera users only.

Beginning Adobe Lightroom 3.0
Saturday October 16th 10a-5p

Learn how to use this powerful tool to organize, edit and output your photography. Adobe’s latest product combines the best aspects of Bridge and Photoshop’s common editing tools into one program. We will explore each module so the student can efficiently navigate the program. In the Library learn to import images, organize them with keywords, add captions and more. Then we’ll explore the versatile Develop module to edit images. Finally we’ll look at the output modules for Slideshow, Print and Web so you can effectively present your images. This class requires the student to have basic proficiency on the computer. The class consists of lecture and hands on practice time with the instructor present. A laptop with the latest version of Lightroom installed is highly recommended so you can work on the program during class. I will be using Lightroom 3.0 to teach but versions of 2.0 are welcome.

Composition & Critique and Marketing Your Photography
Saturday November 13th 10a-4p

Learn to use your digital camera. You have the basics of camera operation down, now let’s make beautiful images! Join me to learn photographic composition. Learn what elements to include and exclude, where to place elements in the image, use lines, lighting and much more. Composition is a keystone of photography regardless of your technical ability. Bring out the photographic artist in you! After lecture we will critique student images. Students should bring 10 images for critique. I will evaluate your images and give you constructive feedback. Show me your great images and your problems. Learn from your experiences as well as those of your classmates. This is a great opportunity to get the most out of your digital camera!

This class requires a working knowledge of your camera or my Getting to Know Your digital camera class. Bring images for critique on a jump drive in jpeg format. Please name images with your first name and numbered in the order you want critiqued, ie: Victoria1, Victoria2, etc…

After the composition class we will spend some time on Marketing Your Photography. What to make some money with all of the images you have? It’s a tough market but photography is everywhere from magazines to newspapers, as fine art, in calendars and cards and more. This 2 hour class will give you an overview of the various markets open to the aspiring photographer.

Did you ever imagine that you could design and create a piece of fine silver jewelry? In just 2 nights, learn the basics of working with Precious Metal Clay (also known as PMC). Precious Metal Clay is a versatile, easy-to-use material that allows just about anyone to make their own fine silver jewelry in a matter of hours. Article Writing 101: The Basics

It’s exciting to see your byline in print. Learn how to craft interesting feature articles in this class that teaches you the fundamentals of how to research your topic, find and interview subjects, create a compelling lead, structure your article, and write for publication. You will get a weekly writing assignment and opportunities to present your work for classroom feedback, and will develop at least one nonfiction article—or more— that you can pitch for publication in magazines, newspapers or on line.

Article Writing 201: Advanced
Going past the basics, learn how to fine tune your nonfiction articles for publication in magazines, newspapers and on line. In addition, you’ll learn how to find outlets to publish your articles, how to craft a compelling pitch, how to pitch articles to editors, and what editors want. You should leave this class with professional-level articles and pitches.
Prerequisite: Article Writing 101.
• 6 weeks — Tuesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
  October 26 through December 7, 2010 (no class November 23/Thanksgiving week)
• Materials: Pen or pencil, paper. You must provide copies of your assignments each week.

Travel Writing 101
Everyone asks me, “How do you get to be a travel writer?” Usually I keep my answers close to the vest. But at last, I’ve decided to share my years of knowledge, tips, and foibles with others who want to follow the same career path.

Travel Writing 101 is an excellent 6-week introduction to this exclusive field. You’ll learn: the types of travel writing, how to spot and refine story ideas, getting the angle, what makes a good travel article, how to work with the tourism industry, interview skills, quotes and citations, sidebars, SEO and writing skills that will help you create an article you can sell. We’ll look at the basics of press trips, writer’s conferences and freebies.

Each week you’ll receive an assignment that will help you build your skills as well as your portfolio. You should be able to pitch your travel piece at the end of this class.

Travel Writing 201
In Travel Writing 201 we go beyond how to find and write the story to the insider secrets you’ve only heard about…such as how to get on press trips, get media discounts, working with editors, and how to publish and re-publish your travel pieces. Along with writing, you’ll learn how to operate your travel writing business, how to pitch and follow up with editors, how to build your platform, photojournalism, and freebie ethics. You’ll also learn how to handle scams, pitfalls and rejections.

Each week you’ll receive an assignment that will help you build your skills as well as your portfolio. You’ll work with a professional editor who will help fine tune at least one of your articles for guaranteed publication through our partnership with V Magazine. Prerequisite: Travel Writing 101 or Article Writing 101

Writing the Short Story
Wanted to try your hand at fiction writing? The good news is that anyone can write. Explore your creative abilities through the short story medium. Each week you’ll receive a stimulating writing assignment that you’ll bring to your next class. You’ll share your work with your classmates and enjoy positive comments and concrete suggestions for improvement in a highly supportive environment. You’ll leave with revived imagination, enhanced writing skills, and a portfolio of work. No prior writing experience is necessary. Select from two sessions:

Media: Any media is acceptable, however if you work in oils no solvent is allowed in the classroom. Canola oil can be used to clean brushes. Poppyseed oil, walnut oil or Res-n-gel can be used as a medium for oils
Students should have some experience in working in the media of their choice. or a de.~.ire to try something new. You will also enjoy the creative exposure of the work done by other students with other materials. Enrollment will be limited to 1 2 and your check will hold your place. 3 Day Seminar October 1 - 3, 2010

Day One (6 hrs): Painting Techniques and Skills Class
Using the Nine Elements * Galzes * Alla prima * Materials

         The possibilities of the painted surface are almost unlimited. Using his philosophy of painting, The Nine Elements of Masterful Painting, Rob will demonstrate different techniques for the students. He will teach them how to create exciting, dynamic surfaces by demonstrating glazing techniques, alla-prima painting techniques, grisaille gesso painting, and palette knife techniques. Students will leave this demonstration absolutely excited to get back to their studios to start trying out these various techniques on their own!

Day Two (6 hrs): Creation Day
Painting * One-on-one Discussions * Group Critique

         Students will bring their supplies and canvases to class. Rob will “make the rounds,” working with each student to help them see how they can make their paintings better by using the Nine Elements philosophy. Students should bring one completed piece, one piece they are currently working on, and two blank canvases (stretched canvas, board, or paper are all acceptable surfaces). The class will end with a group sharing session. Rob will give a critique for each student, helping them understand how they can progress and grow to a new level.

Rob will lead a series of discussions using his new book, “Letters to an Aspiring Artist.” Topics will range from “How to Write an Artist’s Statement” to “How to Create a Solid Career Plan.” He will explore the two paths – regional and national/international – an artist can take, and what an individual needs to do to follow each path. Rob will explore the subject “How do I View Myself as an Artist?” As well as “How Do I Present Myself Professionally?” Samples of good resumes, biographies, and artist’s statements will be distributed.

This fall we will be taking a non-class day to go out for a photo shoot/sketching session early in the morning, and perhaps also at sunset. One site will be on the reservoir in Chesterfield County where still water, boats and occasional people come by. This is optional: as always, students can work on their own individual projects. Crossroads Art Center Classes

The Center offers a multitude of art classes and seminars for all ages and learning levels. Both short and long term classes in varied forms of art and crafts will be offered throughout the year. Class guidelines and cancellations policies

Registration Guidelines

  • Classes without sufficient enrollment five to seven days prior to the first class will be canceled.
  • Late registrations are welcome with space available and instructor's permission.
  • Full payment must accompany registration.
  • Class fees will not be pro-rated for any reason.
  • Payment may be made by cash, check, or charge card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).
  • Unless otherwise noted, classes are open to ages 16 and above.

Cancellations and Refunds

  • The Crossroads Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollment. Fees are 100 percent refundable if the class is canceled by the Crossroads Art Center.
  • Fifty percent of class fees are refunded if withdrawal notice is received seven days or more prior to the first class.
  • No refunds will be made if withdrawal notice is received less than seven days prior to the first class meeting.
  • The Crossroads Art Center does not issue credit vouchers for class withdrawals.

The Crossroads Art Center may on occasion need to substitute an instructor for a course. This is done with the recommendation of the scheduled instructor and does not diminish the quality of instruction
