3 DAY-BASIC MOSAIC ART CLASS

Learn basic tile setting and grouting techniques. Become familiar with different types of tile, glazes, adhesives, grouts and additives. You will leave with your very own finished Mosaic. No art or mosaic experience necessary. All materials will be supplied. Enrollment is limited to ensure a more personalized class. Tuition is $105 when working on a FLOWER POT & $120 when working on a TRAY

2 Day - STEPPING STONE CLASS

Create your very own stepping stone from pouring the mortar to adding the colorful decorations. All materials provided. Tuition is $45.

Working with oil or acrylics, explore the basics of drawing, value, composition, and color mixing. Learn the tools you’ll need to create that masterpiece. Paint from a still life or photograph. You will have instructor demonstrations and lots of individual attention.

To introduce students to the fundamental steps in the oil painting process that will become the foundation for future learning abilities. Without these basics, students cannot realize their full potential, or enjoyment, in advancing their painting skills.

Creating a foundation "Ground Coat" or "Underpainting" This will be part of the first class.
Learning the importance of Perspective, Composition, Value and Light Source Rough Sketching in preparation for the painting, Setting Values - Lights and darks to outline subject, Blocking in color of major components, Filling in Color Detail, Finishing off The Painting

Paperweight Workshop
This class will explore paperweight techniques. In this one-day workshop, students will learn the basic steps in creating their own paperweight from hot molten glass. Students will make 3 paperweights and color will be included for one of them. No experience required. All that is required is a lot of energy and a pair of sunglasses. Long sleeves and long pants are always a good idea too.

Drinking Glass Workshop
This two-day class will explore glassblowing. Students will learn the basic skills to create their own drinking glass. The class will cover how to gather glass from the furnace and blow it into drinking glasses. Students will leave this class with a drinking glass that they made. Color will be provided for one drinking glass created. No experience required. All that is required is a lot of energy and a pair of sunglasses. Long sleeves and long pants are always a good idea too.

Four-Week Glass Class
This four-week course is all about learning the basics techniques of manipulating hot molten glass. Students will learn how to gather hot glass from a furnace, shape it, sculpt it, and blow it into desired forms. The workshop will cover how different tools such as stainless steel tools, wood blocks, and wet newspapers are used to shape the glass. We will have a small furnace of molten glass, one glory hole and an annealing oven. All tools and materials will be provided. This is an opportunity to have a unique experience and depart with a new understanding of glass as well as making some cool things to take home with you. There will be plenty to do and to learn. No experience required. All that is required is a lot of energy and a pair of sunglasses. Long sleeves and long pants are always a good idea too.

Getting to Know Your Digital Camera Saturday February 20th 10am-4pm
This course will take you from the very beginning with your camera through making beautiful pictures. We’ll start by familiarizing you with all of the buttons and menus on the camera. Learn the various shooting modes, white balance options, flash modes, ISO settings, reviewing images, what accessories you need and more. Once you’ve got the mechanics down we’ll talk about getting the images on your computer. I will cover the basics for downloading and backing up your images using Abode Photoshop Elements.
The purpose of class is to give the student a basic understanding of the camera and how to get images on the computer. The class is hands on to aid the student in learning. All classes come with a detailed hand out. There will be several short breaks and a 30 minute lunch break. I recommend bringing a bag lunch but there are some fast food places in the area. The cost is $95 payable to Victoria Dye in advance. Student materials required: Own digital camera with charged batteries, empty memory card and manual. You are welcome to bring your laptop to practice downloading with your own program. Make sure the camera program is loaded and ready to go.
Intermediate Photography: Getting the Most out of Your SLR Camera Saturday March 13th 10am-4pm
Want to gain more control over your photography? Learn to use your camera in the manual modes. Join me to demystify apertures and shutter speeds. Learn to use aperture priority to gain control over your depth of field. Understand shutter priority and when to use it. Finally understand the manual mode and how to make correct exposure decisions. After I explain the concept with lecture, each student will practice various shooting exercises to reinforce the concepts. Learn hands on to gain more control over your camera. This class is for SLR camera users only, it is geared for digital, but film is welcome. The class comes with a detailed hand out. There will be several short breaks and a 30 minute lunch break. Composition & Critique and Marketing Your Photography Saturday April 10th 10am-4pm
Learn to use your digital camera. You have the basics of camera operation down, now let’s make beautiful images! Join me to learn photographic composition. Learn what elements to include and exclude, where to place elements in the image, use lines, lighting and much more. Composition is a keystone of photography regardless of your technical ability. Bring out the photographic artist in you! After lecture we will critique student images. Students should bring 10 images for critique. I will evaluate your images and give you constructive feedback. Show me your great images and your problems. Learn from your experiences as well as those of your classmates. This is a great opportunity to get the most out of your digital camera! This class requires a working knowledge of your camera or my Getting to Know Your digital camera class. Bring images for critique on a jump drive in jpeg format. Please name images with your first name and numbered in the order you want critiqued, ie: Victoria1, Victoria2, etc… After the composition class we will spend some time on Marketing Your Photography. What to make some money with all of the images you have? It’s a tough market but photography is everywhere from magazines to newspapers, as fine art, in calendars and cards and more. This 2 hour class will give you an overview of the various markets open to the aspiring photographer. The class comes with a detailed hand out. LOCATION: My home studio in Powhatan (10 minutes from 288)
CLASS STRUCTURE: I provide a studio easel for each student, and teach on an individual basis. Students bring their own projects and can choose to create a painting from their own reference materials (photos, sketches, field studies), or can set up their own still life that can remain from week to week. I do some demo when the need arises, and we usually have a focus for each session (last fall was on grisaille underpaintings). This session the emphasis will be on color.

Class guidelines and cancellations policies
Registration Guidelines
- Classes without sufficient enrollment five to seven days prior to the first class will be canceled.
- Late registrations are welcome with space available and instructor's permission.
- Full payment must accompany registration.
- Class fees will not be pro-rated for any reason.
- Payment may be made by cash, check, or charge card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express).
- Unless otherwise noted, classes are open to ages 16 and above.
Cancellations and Refunds
- The Crossroads Art Center reserves the right to cancel any class with insufficient enrollment. Fees are 100 percent refundable if the class is canceled by the Crossroads Art Center.
- Fifty percent of class fees are refunded if withdrawal notice is received seven days or more prior to the first class.
- No refunds will be made if withdrawal notice is received less than seven days prior to the first class meeting.
- The Crossroads Art Center does not issue credit vouchers for class withdrawals.
The Crossroads Art Center may on occasion need to substitute an instructor for a course. This is done with the recommendation of the scheduled instructor and does not diminish the quality of instruction

Art classes have been held at the Crossroads Art Center since it opened almost 5 years ago. Most of the art programs and classes have been run by the art teacher for each class and not by Crossroads. Crossroads has always helped the teacher fill the classes by placing class information on the website, by handing out flyers for the class and by creating and sending out emails to our mailing lists.
The scoop --
We will have space for 40 classes (2.5 hours each) a week.
We would like to schedule classes in 6 or 10 week sessions.
We will pay the teachers $25 an hour.
We will need a minimum of 6 people per class for the class to make.
We will have a maximum of 10 students in Gallery 1 and a maximum of 12 students in Gallery 2 unless the teacher has other requirements.
Class Times would run:
Mon. – Thurs. 10am – 12:30, 1pm – 3:30pm, 4pm – 6pm, 6:30pm – 9pm
Fri.& Sat. 10am – 12:30pm, 1pm – 3:30pm
Sunday – 1pm – 3:30pm, 4pm – 6pm
