The Coltrane Collection:
In 2005 Henry applied for and won a grant through the High Point Arts Council to do a series of paintings depicting the works and life of John Coltrane. The collection is now over 21 pieces and is biographical, political, tragic as well as ironic. In short, a perfect metaphor for Coltranes life. Henry knows that no one person can quite capture the essence of Coltrane. She hopes that the collection will inspire everyone especially young people, but more importantly she hopes that they will just listen to music. She likes to point out that, "Its the music that matters, its what makes Coltrane immortal, but truthfully its really all about love...love supreme."

"When I paint, I try and find new meanings in color, texture and shape. I don't paint so much as I observe. Like Neruda, I search for moonlines, apple pathways."
An avid music fan, Henry remembers the day she first heard Coltrane's, "Love Supreme" album. "It was like all of John's spirituality and verve were speaking directly to my soul, and when he played his music, I saw images, shapes, colors. It was one of the most singularly profound moments of my life," Henry recalled. She didn't know then that her fellow High Pointer's life would intersect with hers, but she became a fan of his music and an avid collector of all things Coltrane." It was during this phase of her life that Ms. Henry began searching for a style. She loved oils and watercolors and showed quite an affinity for bright colors. Skillfully integrating aspects of the African experience through figures, and textiles into her vibrant paintings, Henry continued to produce exciting albeit eclectic works, still searching for a distinctive style that she could lay claim to. One day while listening to Coltrane's, "Alabama" Henry began to sob. "The music cut right through me," she would later say. It was at that instant that she knew that she would paint Coltrane's music. She would begin another journey. She felt that since they were both fellow High Pointers that she was uniquely qualified to represent him visually.

Nimrod Hall Group Show

Artists
Nimrod Hall is the perfect haven for the visual artist. Having been site of an artist workshop for the past 14 years, Nimrod Hall has proved itself to be an inspiring and uplifting experience for all who have attended. The Arts Program for the visual artist is four weeks geared toward people who are not looking for formal instruction, but who want the time, in a stress-free environment, to create art among peers and resident artists. Each week will offer an artist-in-residence who is a professional in his or her medium, who will be available for one-on-one consultations as well as lead group critiques. See the attached insert for this year's artists-in-residence. The Arts Program is in the spirit of an art colony, offering colony-like accommodations and serenity in one-week sessions. Each artist will have a private room in one of the cottages and this room will double as a studio. Painting is allowed almost anywhere, and porches seem to be the most inspiring studio space! The rooms are not set up with lighting, so it's wise to bring clamp lights, etc.

Haiti Relief Effort at Art Show
AT Home Care and Physicians for Peace
to Collect Donations and Therapy Equipment
For Clinics in Haiti

RICHMOND, VA - Crossroads Art Center will be the site for a fundraiser/collection for Physicians for Peace's Haiti relief effort. The event will take place March 19th from 6 to 9:00 pm at the Crossroads Art Center on Staples Mill Road, in conjunction with their monthly art opening. AT Home Care Physical Therapist and Amputee Specialist, David Lawrence, will speak about the Walking Free Program in Haiti, how the clinic was severely damaged and what the public can do to help aid in its rebuilding. AT Home Care has held a Limb Drive each spring for the past 7 years which collects used prosthetic limbs and orthotic devices as well as walkers and wheelchairs. The prosthetics are then disassembled and used for the Physicians for Peace's Walking Free program in developing countries such as Jordan, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Turkey, Guatemala and Philippines. This event was moved up due to the immediate need of the Haitians.

The Walking Free ambassadors are focusing on raising money for the center in Haiti which was destroyed and left several employees dead. Their goal is to rebuild as well as add on an inpatient facility that can take care of the overwhelming number of new amputees. The days after the earthquake, medics saw an average of 70 amputations being performed daily. Though the pace has slowed, the need for equipment and rehabilitation training and care has skyrocketed.

"Walking Free" was developed by AT Home Care's physical therapist, David A. Lawrence, in 2002, by partnering with Physicians for Peace, to provide the much needed equipment as well as to set up sustainable rehabilitation centers in these countries. The group's goal of long-term sustainability includes education and training, patient care, business support, and assistance with access to supplies. Success is measured when the clinics are able to not only operate on their own, but are able to expand their business and patient care," emphasizes Lawrence. "This is a wonderful way to reuse these devices and help those who would otherwise not have the chance to become independent and functioning members of their community", exudes Lawrence. "It also creates jobs for people whose chances of employment are very limited."

Your donation could change the life of an amputee living in another part of the world. For more information call AT Home Care at 804 359-3400 ext 1211, Carrie Dorsey at carrie.dorsey@athomecare.com or Mary Kwazniewski at Physicians for Peace at 757 625-7569 or mkwasnie@physiciansforpeace.org.

Crossroads Art Center is located at 2016 Staples Mill Road and hosts a variety of artists. 804 278-8950 may be dialed for any questions.

AT Home Care is the largest, full service, independent home health care agency in Virginia with branches in Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Charlottesville, Fredericksburg, Tri Cities and Richmond.
Physicians For Peace is an international, humanitarian, nonprofit and medical education organization based in Norfolk.

Golden Fields
Mollie Vardell - "Golden Fields"
Artists' Statement

I have always been drawn to art and creating things. Starting out as an art major in college, I switched majors and enjoyed a fulfilling career in interior architecture and design. After retiring from the field about five years ago, my love of art has come full circle to art and oil painting in particular. The process of painting for me is a journey. It takes me out of my day-to-day routine and absorbs me in entirety. It brings passion and joy with plenty of frustration mixed in for good measure. It makes me stretch. It makes me grow. And it is a constant challenge. Every day is different.

While initially starting off with still life as my subject, my current painting is focused on the landscape. After a trip to France in the fall of 2006, I became entranced by the images of the French villages and countryside. Upon my return I painted my first landscape, Cezanne's Atelier where I tried to render the building's rustic texture, the lush greenery, the interesting shadow patterns, and the dappled light. Next I completed about seven other works representing beautiful places in France that touched me. I realized then that I must be totally captivated by a subject before I can paint it with passion. I also realized that I am lucky to be a painter because I better appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. I look harder, I stop to appreciate. Then I wonder how I could possibly convey this beauty on a canvas.

My goals are to continue to paint landscapes that represent the beauty around us. I want to pursue a looser, more impressionistic style and continue to develop paintings with great light and interesting shadow patterns. I want to further develop my skills in a new technique I developed for rendering sky with a vigorous brush stroke and lightness that I call confetti. I want to further my art education because an artist needs to be continually challenged. I also believe there is so much to be learned from the masters and look forward to spending much time in museums. Winston Churchill was an accomplished artist as well as a statesman, and he so compassionately writes, "Painting is a companion with whom one may walk a great part of life's journey." My journey into art continues.
