Exhibition Proposals

Crossroads Art Center Galleries

The Crossroads Gallery is showcasing an exciting schedule of art shows and events open to local, regional and nationally recognized artists. Our artists can expect a high standard of professional representation for their work at the Crossroads Gallery. Our clientele can also expect to be treated with gracious courtesy and respect for their particular tastes. All Media Gallery Shows are held every other month and are juried art shows where all medium types are accepted.

The Crossroads Art Center Exhibition Programming Policy

The Crossroads Art Center is dedicated in presenting quality artwork, and the conceptual integrity of exhibition proposals (as well as the particular scope or focus of CAC's exhibit schedule for that year) are the primary deciding factors in determining which artists are selected for exhibition. Submissions should be sent to Exhibitions Director, Jenni Kirby; Crossroads Art Center, 2016 Staples Mill Rd, Richmond, VA 23230 The following types of exhibition opportunities are offered by CAC:

1) “ALL MEDIA” Shows selected by Jurors
Monthly “All Media Show” exhibitions are juried by arts professionals such as museum curators, arts organization curators, art consultants, art critics, independent curators, art historians and accomplished artists. All mid-Atlantic artists are invited to submit their works to CAC through a Call for Entries procedure. The number of artists selected depends upon the juror's decision. Cash prizes are awarded. Anyone who wishes to receive a prospectus for upcoming juried shows may send his or her address to CAC at the above address or via email: Jenni’s email address: jennikirby@crossroadsartcenter.com.

2) Solo and Group exhibitions initiated by CAC Exhibitions Director
Solo and group exhibitions are initiated by the Crossroads Art Center Exhibitions Director. The Exhibitions Director curates solo or thematic group exhibitions. These exhibitions result from the introduction to an artist's (or group’s) work through: digital image submissions; studio visits; research in image registries; visits to other galleries and arts organizations; attending lectures, panels, and special events; visiting university art departments; peer recommendations from other artists and curators; readings and other sources of inspiration.

3) Solo and Group Exhibitions proposed by Artists
Crossroads Art Center encourages artists and groups working in various media to submit proposals for exhibitions. Exhibition proposals are reviewed by the Exhibitions Director in consultation with the Exhibitions Committee. Proposals are reviewed throughout the year as submissions are received. The review process takes approximately 2-3 months but may take longer depending on the number of submissions received at any one time. Artists are selected on overall quality, innovation, and thoroughness of proposal.

An exhibition proposal consists of two parts: 1) a completed proposal package, including application form and checklist; and 2) an in-person review of the proposed artworks. Please carefully review the application form and checklist. Artists will need to provide:

•      a description of the proposed exhibit (to include a statement about previous shows and sales as well as projected marketing)
•      an artist’s statement and a resume
•      images of the artwork
•      supporting materials.

In addition, a non-refundable $25 jury fee is required for the jurying process. This will be applied toward the gallery fee if the proposal is accepted.

Once the proposal has been reviewed and accepted, the Exhibitions Director will contact the artist to make an appointment for in-house review of the artworks that will be shown. If the proposal is declined, all materials will be returned to the artist.

Once the full jury process has been completed, the artist will be notified by phone or e-mail of the results.

We plan our exhibition schedule two to three years in advance. Artists must keep this in mind when working with our Exhibitions Director to select a date for the show.

Five gallery spaces are available. They vary in size and pricing structure. The Exhibition Director will work with the artist to select the most appropriate space for the proposed show.

PLEASE NOTE: All artwork must be for sale or an additional $200 fee for exhibition only will be applied.

4) Thematic Group Exhibitions Organized by Curators
Curators may submit proposals of thematic group exhibitions that explore an idea in depth. CAC recommends that one individual serve as the project organizer (curator / artist / writer). This individual should not be one of the proposed exhibiting artists. Artistic quality, depth of research, budget feasibility, attention to administrative detail, and overall professionalism of the proposal are deciding factors in selecting exhibitions. Submissions should include: an exhibition goal statement; a list of artists with their resumes and current slides or videos; experience of project organizer (resume), budget, outline of project needs, and a self-addressed stamped envelope with protective cardboard and sufficient postage to cover return of submission.

CAC’s Director of Exhibitions will review thematic curatorial submissions and respond through a letter or telephone call. Consideration of submissions is ongoing. Again, applicants should be aware that the exhibition schedule is being developed almost two years in advance.

**Artwork must be for sale or an additional $200 fee for exhibition only will be applied.

5) Traveling or Shared Exhibitions
CAC also presents traveling or shared exhibitions of art that are organized by other institutions. An example is the Paper Cutters Guild of North America, in its traveling schedule; the guild was able to host a show in Gallery I. Other collaborations include co-organized exhibitions with other institutions and artist residencies in the schools or community.
