"Sharing my spirit through art"
My art is my auto biography. Whether it is a piece that represents my Hispanic heritage or one that reflects my spirit as a woman, I believe I try to capture a memory, a desire or simply a feeling in each of my works. Many of my works are scenes from places I love. I first saw the ocean as an adult and fell in love with the serene nature of the beach. Many of my works, such as "footsteps", two canvases depict these serene scenes. Others are memories from my youth growing up as a Mexican American with Yaqui Indian blood in Tucson Arizona." The Deer Dancer" superimposed over the San Javier Mission and "Mesa Para Dos". I love color as well as black and white so you'll see in my drawings. My series of women entitled "Senoritas" is intended to depict feminine women who are comfortable with their sexuality, yet strong and intelligent, capable and ready for whatever life throws at them. In many ways these works show both my Mexican and American sides.
"Mesa Para Dos" ("Table for Two", Cantina scene) Oil, $1,800, reproductions available
Although teaching Spanish, Photography and Art was my profession for 21 years, I left teaching to pursue my real passion, creating art. I work in several different mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolors, pencil and pastels. I stay in touch with my instructional roots by teaching seminars on "How to run a classroom in a cultural diverse atmosphere. I am proud of the fact that my work has been featured on the cover of "El Centro" the Spanish newspaper published by the Times Dispatch. I have participated in many art shows and have taught Native American Cultural Diversity at the Virginia Museum. My Seminars have been in Chesterfield Schools, Richmond City Schools, and at St. Catherine's School. I do both gallery art and commission work and have participated in many Art Shows including recently at “Jingle on the James”. I enjoy all mediums.
