Teacher Spotlight: Curney Nuffer

Curney Nuffer came to be an artist after a series of aptitude tests revealed that his other jobs in sales and in police work were the absolute wrong professions for him. He had always enjoyed drawing and soon became interested in painting. He studied with Eloise Adkinson at Uptown Gallery before meeting, “The Russians” a group of artists from Russia and the Republic of Georgia who shared with him what he considers to be the most important fundamental rules of painting. “They taught me a way of seeing with both eyes, in a whole-istic way,” says Nuffer, “And that the search for the correct color never stops.”

With 22 years of teaching experience, CAC is proud to have Nuffer leading drawing and painting classes. His approach to teaching beginner painters is one of guidance. “I give a person a good foundation to build off of,” he says. “I help students find their own way so they can get to a place where their intuition takes over.” Nuffer’s ideal student has an open mind with a desire to learn the basic elements of drawing, mixing color and how to see things with the perspective necessary for painting. “The most important thing is to want to have fun,” says Nuffer. “We have fun in the class.”

Curney is offering the following classes this Winter session at Crossroads Art Center:

  • Winter 2020 Painting with Curney Nuffer

Mondays, January 6 through Monday, February 24 | 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Tuesdays, January 7 through Tuesday, February 25, 2020 | 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Beginners, intermediate and advanced levels are welcome. Classes are primarily focused on oil painting, but Curney welcomes artists who work in acrylic and watercolor. The use of oil paint — from brushes and canvases to palette and technique — is the emphasis in these classes. Curney will demonstrate how the use of a limited palette emphasizes the importance of color, value, intensity, and placement of paint. Composition and the use of photos versus using still-life setups and plein air landscapes will be discussed. Demos and exercises are combined with painting time, or artists have the option to paint on their own with help from Curney throughout the class.

A supply list and more class info will be sent to every student via email in advance. No refunds once classes have started. Class size is limited to ten.

To register, please email Susan Dull at susandull@icloud.com to be sure that there is room for you in the class. Your check will hold your place in class. Class fee is $240, which includes model fee. No refunds once classes have started.

  • Drawing and Painting the Nude with Curney Nuffer

Tuesdays, February 4 – February 25, 2020 | 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

“The nude does not simply represent the body, but relates it, by analogy, to all structures that have become part of our imaginative experience”. --- Sir Kenneth Clark, former Director, the National Gallery, London.

Curney Nuffer is offering classes for artists who would like to learn about drawing and painting the nude. This is a three-hour class once a week to explore sketching first, then building the form of the human body by painting dark to light. The model will be lit and emphasis will be placed on seeing the values of the skin tones as well as using color. Every other week there will be a different model.

The palette that Curney uses is specially mixed by students in advance and originated at the Art Students League in New York. It requires the use of only 7 tube colors of paint and white. It is key to building a strong foundation for painting the human form based upon simplicity and strong shapes. Even if you don’t want to paint figures or portraits in the future, the lessons you will learn will greatly improve your drawing and painting. You can draw for all the classes and not paint if you prefer.
