About Atanas Stamenov
A member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists (UBA - 6 “Shipka” str., 1000 Sofia, Bulgaria)
Born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1949. During the communist regime he embarked along the road to Visual arts in 1962 when he enrolled in the renowned drawing course at the National Pioneer Palace . During the training he had a predilection for watercolor and Indian ink. In 1964 he started studying at a vocational school of drawing and decorating of ceramics and glass. He studied 6 semesters at the National Academy of Art, major - Design of Porcelain and Glass (with an additional profile - Sculpture). At the beginning of his career as an artist (from 1971 at the “Balkanturist”/Balkantourist” Tourism Complex) Atanas Stamenov is working in the field of graphic design (it was then when his first poster on the topic of “Attractions and Tourism”, advertising materials and vinyl record covers), ceramics and painting. In this starting-up period of the 70s he also engaged in get-up of books as a contributor to the specialised “Prosveta”/”Education” publishing house.
In the middle of the 70s, Stamenov was working as a designer for commercial window displays in the “Hranitelni stoki”/”Foodstuffs” trust, where he realized dozens of modern artistic decisions for shop windows in the capital city of Sofia, with some of which he won prizes (1975). In the period between 1977-84, Atanas Stamenov was an artist of the Central Student House of Culture, Sofia - for 7 years he realised many stage layouts there (for the “Studentina” Theatre/ a tour and performances in Mexico, Canada, the USA; for the “Pantomima”/”Pantomime” Theatre - performances in Poland, Russia; for the very popular “Folkloren Tantsov Sastav”/”Folklore Dance Group” Youth Pop Music Competition, “Academichen Hor”/”Academic Chorus” and others), around 350 large format advertising movie posters for the facade, emblematic artistic posters for the 11 national student casts and their performances. In the middle of the 80s Stamenov ended his work in the national institution Central Student House of Culture (1977-84) and started working as a freelance artist. Following a series of prizes (1984-86; an award-winning work of the artist is located in Poland, “Auschwitz-Birkenau” State Museum), in 1989 he was admitted in 1989 as a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists - the national artistic association of the professional artists and art historians in Bulgaria. For years (1980-95) he was contributing as an artist to the Bulgarian National Film Archive, the “Odeon” Film Archive Cinema and the Cinema House, Sofia.
During the entire period - from the 70s until this day - the artist is engaged on a daily basis with figurative and abstract painting, by participating in joint national and international exhibitions. Primarily in the genres landscape, portrait, still life. He is an active propagandist of art in the social networks (Facebook page Atanas Stamenov and administrator of a group for Visual arts ”Lud peizazh”/“Crazy landscape”). From 1978 until 1990 he was participating in all national “Grafichen dizain”/”Graphic Design” exhibitions in the “Shipka” 6 National Exhibition Centre, Sofia, Bulgaria and in all biennials of the theatre poster (Dimitrovgrad, later Sofia). Since the year 2000 he has been participating in the well-known International Stage Poster Triennial (Sofia) consecutively in 2007, 2010, 2016, 2019.
