Artist Statement
I received a BFA in painting and printmaking at the University of Michigan School of Art in 1980. In the years since, I've maintained an in-home studio in VA, currently in Richmond. While raising my family, I chose photography as my creative outlet, largely for its accessibility. Over the years, my camera has become integral to my art. My view through the camera lens organizes the world--in a particular way that satisfies me and makes sense to me. I have a compositional attraction to defined edges. It's easier to find it through the lens where I'm forced to look at just what's there in front of me. I know what I'm drawn to and regularly scan my surroundings for these edges defined by textures, lines, reflections, shapes, and shadows--things I've seen through the camera lens. When I come into the studio, everything I do is informed by what I've seen. Images don't always present themselves on paper or canvas exactly as I saw them -- I deconstruct them and put them back together again. I'm never sure exactly how or why but I keep working to figure it out. And that keeps me coming back to try again.
