And swimming. Her mother was a kindred spirit in both art and music while her father was the water lover. For over forty years, she was a professional cellist and teacher. As a freelance musician in Washington DC, she tooks art classes at the Art League of Alexandria and completed a certificate in computer graphics at the Corcoran School of Art. Art was antidote and release from the exactness demanded in classical music. Even now she has recurrent dreams of telling her college teachers that she was going to change majors and study art. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFinally, during COVID, Deborah decided to make a commitment to that persistent call to create visually and began a continuing education program through the Rhode Island School of Design. More formal art study helped join her artistic, impulsive side with her understanding of the value of technical training. She completed her certificate in painting in 2024. At last she knew that she would not be a moment away from dying saying, “I didn’t do it!” Yes, that was a persistent vision too. Deborah continues to take classes in person or online to continue honing technical skills and advance her own style. Several influential teachers include Roberto Osti and Al Gury.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore moving to the Richmond area in 2024, Deborah submitted a painting and was accepted into her first juried show. After a year she was invited to submit a proposal for a solo exhibit at Art Works. In June of 2026 she presented her first solo gallery show, a series of acrylic paintings inspired by classical music. As a painter, much of her style and process is linked to music. Line, shape, color and texture are all major influences in her creative process. While many of her oil and acrylic works have their seeds drawn from specific musical works, others are inspired by landscapes or emotional and spiritual responses to times and places which are sometimes a challenge to pinpoint. An incessant need to dig deeper into life and art push her to find new ways to express and share with others. Visual art is her spirit’s expression of choice.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eArtist Statement\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cbr\u003eMany of current abstract acrylic and oil paintings are based on music ideas: gestures, form, texture and color. Some of these works build from the bottom up in layers of textures, condensing a linear piece of music to a single canvas. Others follow physical gestures and shapes of the music itself or using actual marks from the score itself. Another recent interest is abstraction of landscapes, working to capture the energy of a place or time through color in particular. I love using the palette knife and am finding brayers to be freeing in the application of paint as well. In some of my acrylics, I used paper or other mediums like pumice underneath as texture but the predominant effect is that of a painting, not mixed media. While I also do more realistic work, those pieces often serve as ways to study light and composition in a way that I can then create an abstraction from them. I move between absolutely invented abstraction to realism, acrylic or oils, depending on my needs at the time.
