Karen Julihn

Mixed Media Artist

Karen Julihn creates art using multiple media techniques.  Stemming from a water color background, her artwork has branched out into acrylic and oil painting. Karen also enjoys the abstracted look created by working with paper collage and mixed media.

Taking inspiration from her surroundings, nature, and other artists, Karen’s art journey is an evolving experience.  She believes she will always be in transition as she continuously explores new techniques for creating layers and texture.  Generally speaking, Karen prefers to simplify form and exaggerate color. However, on occasion, she has literally thrown paint at her canvas. “I like a modern approach,” she says. “I prefer to abstract my subject, but I also like my ideas to remain representational.”

Homebased in Fredericksburg, Virginia, Karen’s art has been displayed in art shows and galleries in the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Colonial Beach area since 2009. She credits much of her art education to VCU graduate courses, workshops at Art of the Carolinas, in addition to studying with individual artists. She is a graduate of Syracuse University in New York and earned a MEd from George Mason University in Virginia. Currently, she organizes small group art classes at the Fredericksburg Community Center and through local galleries. She resides in Fredericksburg with husband Larry, dog Penny and Chloe kitty.
