CAC Artist Interview:

After finding her mother’s old oil paints and taking a class when she was in her 20s, Karen Palmer discovered something she has applied to her art. “It’s all about contrast and creating depth. It’s amazing how both can create incredible effects.” Formerly a stay-at-home mom for 20 years, Karen created art for joy and used painting as a way to encourage her children’s creativity. During the pandemic, Karen finally decided to turn that joy into a business and took the plunge launching her art business as “Art to be lived in”. “So, I hit the pavement and it’s been so good. It’s funny how you just fall into something.”

Karen enjoys unconventional painting techniques, often using house paint and even large house paint brushes. Most of her artworks begin without a plan, subliminally emerging from her subconscious and letting the canvas take her away. “Sometimes, when creating abstracts, I even flip the painting upside down if I see something unique developing. I start most paintings on a table like an architectural drawing, maybe that’s why I tend to see something later when I change perspectives.” She is not limited to one particular artistic process and instead prefers to follow a feeling. "I let the painting develop with me. I don't try to control the process and let things unfold organically."

Karen likes to create artwork in series, and being a songwriter guitar player herself, she started painting abstract acoustic guitars. This particular series evolved from an effort to be environmentally conscious – “I always try to use all the extra paint in my tray. Whether it be to make these small guitar paintings or something else.” Inspired by nature, Karen is already brainstorming future series which will range from moving water, mountainscapes, and a heart collection for Valentine’s Day. She also plans to create more wearable art, and art for the home, all based on her original artworks – “art to be lived in is my business motto after all!”

Transitioning to this new artistic phase has helped Karen grow as an artist, by re-centering and focusing on her love of nature, playing music, and what inspires her. “It’s more about giving a piece of myself to my children and others. It creates a sense of accomplishment and sparks emotion.”

Artist Bio:

Originally from Boston, MA, Karen has been a Richmond, VA resident for over 20 years. A self taught artist and former busy stay at home mom to two children, Karen enjoyed creating art with her children as a together time activity for their home, friends, and family.

Karen’s influences are primarily from her enjoyment of impressionism when she was younger, which can be seen in her style. She is particularly inspired by landscapes and floral scenery, to create art in a variety of styles including abstracts. She’s a free spirit and goes where the canvas takes her using whatever tools and mediums she is inspired to use. Karen’s goal when she paints is to create and title a piece that is both pleasing to the eye, evokes an emotion of familiarity and enjoyment, while also drawing the viewer in for a second look to connect with her art.

As her children are launching into adulthood, she has been creating a new path with her art. Her original artwork has been the inspiration for palmer K designs - an online store of clothing, home goods, and accessories created from her originals as “art to be lived in”.
