Artist Statement

I make art out of wood. I view doors as an opportunity to create sculpture out of functional and utilitarian objects. I approach a new door as a painter would approach a blank canvas. I look at the grain, and I may let the particulars of the wood guide my carving, though I vary my approach. In the past, I based my doors on abstractions of elements of nature, now I am drawn to a more realistic interpretation of nature. Recently, I incorporated color into a door to provide more depth and a three-dimensional approach. I craft the door using mortise and tenon slabs to provide enough structure to support the depth of the carving, therefore my doors are substantial.
