Eager to paint “Jack in the Pulpit” after photographing it at Ginter Botanical Gardens, I sought to include the forest surroundings rather than take a botanical illustrator’s approach to the subject. The natural stripes in the plant stand out nicely against the forest floor.
Artist's Statement:
I was fortunate to take art lessons when I was 10, courtesy of my mother. And, for most of my adult years, I was “too busy” to paint. Gardening. Landscaping, home building were my creative outlets. Recently I have returned to watercolor painting, building on garden discoveries: the amazing variety of color in purple cone-flowers, the beauty in dried leaves beside blooming native plants in the woods such as Pink Lady Slippers and Jack in the Pulpit. While I try to represent the subject of a painting, I also try to keep paintings fresh with clean colors and light. Each painting is a discovery, a celebration of creation, and hopefully, something pleasant to view.
