My work is shaped primarily by a sensitive connection to nature. Painting imparts a visual “language” that allows me to express my emotional responses to the landscape through the handling of form, color and light.

Bio

The natural world is where I receive my primary source of inspiration. Nature offers ever changing light, shadow, color and pattern. Painting on location can be very challenging but also extremely rewarding. When painting in the studio, I play music to set the mood but outdoors, nature’s music is usually the perfect backdrop; bird calls, tree top breezes or rivers falling over rocks. I’m drawn to those places that feel somewhat timeless and distant from modern life, especially the more pristine places like rivers, mountains, marshes, meadows, gardens, and forests. Whether a painting is completed on location or studies are made for a larger studio painting, the outdoor experience brings a more intimate nature connection to my work.

With a BA in Art from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, I graduated with knowledge of human anatomy and life drawing of the nude figure. During those college years, drawing skills and oil painting were strongly stressed and I’m grateful for that classic training. After college, I found an interest in portrait painting which led to commissions in oil and pastel. After taking a few watercolor classes however, I fell in love with the spontaneity and transparency of that medium. I painted portrait and figures for several years, then discovered the joys of painting watercolor landscapes.

Art can be a solitary endeavor, so connections to other artists are vital. In addition to teaching drawing, watercolor and oil, I’m a member of several art groups that provide fellowship and exhibition opportunities: Virginia Plein Air Painters and Virginia Watercolor Society. My work is exhibited in several galleries, as well as corporate and private collections. My watercolor is published in the North Light book, “How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint Landscapes”.

The learning continues with every painting and with life experiences. Through art, I hope to share my strong connection with the natural world.
