Martha Ensign Johnson has spent over 45 years focused on printmaking in her art career. She has had more than 15 solo exhibitions across the USA (IN, MI, MN, IL, CA, NC) as well as Norway (Stavanger, Kristiansand, Bergen and Oslo), numerous group shows, and has been acquired by many public, corporate and private collections. Her studio praxis has been shaped by her years in academia, remaining partially research based, socially and environmentally concerned, with a certain literary bent. For many years she also taught in public schools as artist in residence, artist in education and in colleges in Minnesota (Northwestern College, St. Paul, MN 1997-2004) and in California (Westmont College, Santa Barbara, CA 2008-2012). Students from those colleges have gone on for graduate degrees in printmaking and professorships as well as launching and administrating an international printmaking studio (Trykkeriet Senter for Samtidsgrafikk, Bergen, Norway). She continues her studio career in Black Mountain, North Carolina.
