In my art, I express my feelings and perceptions of gender and how I navigate these emotions as a transgender person. In this piece, I use the act of beheading as a metaphor for transition, with the pose based off Caravaggio’s painting “David with the Head of Goliath”. The figure with the sword represents my future or ideal self, and the head that is being held is my past self, before realizing I was trans. To be transgender often feels like you are fighting to rid the world of your former self, so you can be seen as who you really are. In this self-portrait, I am killing my past self, so that I am no longer held back but rather free to grow into the person I want to be.
