What and Why!
Many people think of Richmond as a town that supports the arts. Now artists are getting together to support small locally owned businesses. Crossroads Art Center is coordinating an effort to lend businesses a helping hand in this economic slowdown. "We are doing this through a "Small Business RVA Fundraiser" (online art sales). Local artists are creating or submitting pieces they already have in inventory that are associated with a small local business. We are selling the pieces online with a portion of the proceeds of the sales going to that business,” says Jenni Kirby, owner of CAC.
Kirby, a board member of the Retail Merchants Association, recognized a need for local businesses to get financial aid and knew that local artists would want to help. She came up with a special online shopping opportunity and made a call out to the CAC artist community for them to participate. “I just knew that they would want to be involved,” she says.
The artists have been invited to submit pieces and decide what percentage of the sale of the piece will go to the business. When a piece is purchased, CAC will send a check to that business directly so they will have the money quickly. “The online collection will be up and running early next week,” says Savannah Ball, Marketing Director at CAC. “We will have original art and prints ready for purchase and will add more art daily so folks will want to keep coming back to support more of their favorite small Richmond businesses.”
In addition to the Small Business Fundraiser, the CAC website features art from all four of its current exhibitions and many of its artists in residence. “It’s important to support local artists during this economically different time as well,” says Kirby.
