Maple Burl Lidded Vessel No. 358
Maple, Walnut and Ebony Wood
6.5" Dia x12.5" Tall

When I decided to create the work titled Maple Burl Lidded Vessel No.358 I primarily wanted it to be an attractive and unique object of both beauty and function. For the body I chose to use a Norway maple burl which had some very interesting grain and spalting. I turned the body with a natural edge outer rim to show the irregular surface of the burl. In burls you will encounter natural voids and openings and I chose to fill some of these voids with natural malachite and synthetic red coral inlays to enhance these features. For the ring and lid I chose to use black walnut with rich dark brown tones that go well with the maple body.
For the finial I chose Gabon ebony which takes on a nearly black color when the finish is applied. The finish I used is Minwax wipe on Polyurethane which produces a nice patina and offers a durable and easy to maintain finish.
