It’s a word that describes an entity, living or non-living, that grows in a foreignenvironment. I see this concept as a reflection of the African American experience: people stolen from their homeland, brought to North America as cargo, stripped of their identities, and separated from their African heritage. Expected to embrace a future that does not imagine them, standing on a groundless present, while being weighed down by a heavy past. African Americans have been expected to grow within an environment that was shaped by them but not for them. A rich, vibrant and ancient culture replaced with a fragile stereotype-backed concept such as race. Race has become so deeply ingrained into African American culture, that it has become synonymous with identity. This obstructs a sense of true identity, reinforcing systemic oppression and racial prejudice.

Drawing from the African Diaspora, and the Civil Rights movement, my work aims to discuss the negative impact of race on African American identity. I work across a multitude of mediums to offer a different perspective, as well as highlighting the different aspects of my concept. Text and figures apparent in my works on paper coincide and actively engage with one another. Words and text act as my own voice, constantly battling the process within the composition. Simulating the struggle African American voices face in American society due to systemic oppression. While the sculpted figures inspired by African masks and scenes from the Civil Rights movement act as spirits. Embodying the emotional response of the complex ideas provoked by the text. My approach to painting and sculpture offers a mind, body and spiritual conversation. Allowing for a more open interpretation. Inspired by the Nigerian belief of Emi and Ori(spirit, and destiny), instinct and intuition become the process. In doing so my works resemble a future where identity is a whole with many parts. Ultimately, my work draws from past experiences and future wishes to encourage discussions of change by asking viewers the present question of : “Who am I outside of American Ideology?"

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0780/8101/files/Green_Nasir_WeMustNotRegress_Photo___150.jpg?v=1792621625
