The excitement of Washington DC fireworks!
In my studio and plein air work I often try to capture moments and views of sites that are under-appreciated and ignored. Even more, I try to capture the feeling associated with those views. My work is not merely documentation; it is about passage. It is about impressions. It is about the moment. It is about focus.
The focus may not be about 'finishing' an image. It may also what to leave unfinished. How much can be said with how little.
Alla prima, au premier coup—all at once, first strike. My best work has always been about this process. Whether outside or in the studio, once I’ve completed my thoughts and worked out my plan, I work until the painting is done, in a very direct manner, usually without layers. I paint with a palette knife and water-miscible oils, but occasionally with watercolor, gouache, and egg tempera.
