I love watching the sun and moon rise over this small stream, which empties into the Chickahominy River.
Artist Statement
In my studio and plein air work I often try to capture moments and views of sites that are under-appreciated and ignored. Even more, I try to capture the feeling associated with those views. My work is not merely documentation; it is about passage. It is about impressions. It is about the moment. It is about focus. The focus may not be about 'finishing' an image. It may also what to leave unfinished. How much can be said with how little. Alla prima, au premier coup—all at once, first strike. My best work has always been about this process. Whether outside or in the studio, once I’ve completed my thoughts and worked out my plan, I work until the painting is done, in a very direct manner, usually without layers. I paint with a palette knife and water-miscible oils, but occasionally with watercolour, gouache, and egg tempera.I work en plein air, but also from memory, informed by my photographs, sketches and impressions. I have recently begun working in gouache and egg tempera, as well as leaving work in a finished/unfinished state.
