Little Loafers Clay and Glaze

5.25 x 7 x 5"

The TULIPIERE dates back to the 1600s when it was created for tulips. Today, any flowers look perfect! My tulipiere is a 21-step process working at the wheel and hand building. For a final touch, I drizzle a glaze that “runs” with other glazes to achieve a unique and cascading effect.

Artist's Statement:

I love pottery! Even before I became a potter more than 20 years ago, I was drawn to hand crafted ceramic creations. I took my first pottery class at Lill Street Gallery in Chicago, my home town. I get a lot of satisfaction sitting at a wheel and making a bowl, a cup, a vessel that can be manipulated to whatever shape and design I want. I also enjoy hand building and have created a few sculptures.   Making something out a lump of clay is exciting and daunting. I work from my studio in Midlothian, Virginia where I can enjoy the leisure of throwing/hand building, glazing and firing my work. I appreciate that my ceramic creations are purchased by others that see the unique and artistic flair imbued in each piece. I believe that my fingerprints and spirit flow through each vessel. Throughout the years, I attended many workshops—at Penland, Arrowmont and others--and learned from the masters. I also attended ceramic classes at the University of Alaska while teaching IT courses there and lived in Anchorage for 11 years before coming to Virginia.
