First Note is a memory of my granddaughter, Abby, sitting at her great-grandmother Miriam's baby grand piano and finding out how music is made. Miriam doted on her girls, and this visit was special, since Miriam loved playing that piano. Working with soft Pastels on dark Canson paper, I wanted to spotlight Abby at the moment of discovery.  I hinted at the piano and bench, showing only the keyboard, since that was what Abby was concentrating on.

Artist's Statement:

My preferred painting medium has been pastels since my first art class in High School.  I paint portraits and wildlife because I delight in capturing the inner self of my subjects.  Each one is special, and my challenge is to bring for that uniqueness.  Every painting is a celebration of life.

I have found additional challenges in landscape and still life painting.  Working in pastels, colored pencil and graphite, my award-winning paintings reproduce the spirit of my subjects in a style that is almost three dimensional in effect.

Since 1987, when I began painting full time, I have painted commissioned portrait and wildlife paintings in Virginia and Florida.  I am presently showing my work at Crossroads Art Center, in Richmond, Virginia.  I teach pastel painting classes at The Cultural Arts Center At Glen Allen, where my work is also displayed.

I have been fortunate enough to have won many awards and been published by the Virginia Museum of Natural History, and Virginia Tech.  I was featured in Mature Outlook magazine.  My paintings hang in private and public collections from Florida to Alaska.  Visit my website www.LLWolitz.com.
