GENERAL INFORMATION

Susan Singer's teaching philosophy involves offering you, the student, a rich, engaging, fun, encouraging, resource-laden adventure as you begin or continue your creative journey. She recognizes it can feel intimidating to begin to learn a new skill as an adult, so, especially in the Beginning classes, she teaches discrete skills in a way that they can be learned then mastered. From there, you will learn other skills, and eventually, you'll be able to combine them to create drawings and paintings that will amaze you!

INTRODUCTION TO PASTELS

For the first time in years, I’ll be offering Introduction to Pastels. Beginning August 3, 10-12:30, you can spend 6 Mondays learning how to work with this glorious, rich, colorful, intense, easy, powerful medium!

The first class begins with an introduction to the different brands of pastels and papers that are available. You’ll get a chance to use each one so you can determine which kind you want to buy for yourself (the prices and quality vary greatly, so I want you to have a chance to try them for yourself before purchasing them so you make an informed decision). In each class afterwards, you’ll be given exercises to practice using pastels so you can explore their qualities. Some drawing experience is very helpful though not required. You’ll leave the class with a strong sense of how pastel works and with a few final products as well!

August 3 - Sept 14, 10-12:30, 6 Mondays, $240 + $10 for some supplies.  Please email SusanSingerArt@msn.com to sign up or to get more information. Please read the cancellation/refund policy below before signing up. Thank you.

Drawing for ABSOLUTE Beginners

Drawing is a SKILL which can be learned - sort of like playing basketball or learning a language. Even if you’ve never, ever drawn a thing, or feel like you’ve failed when you’ve tried, I promise, you can learn how to draw!

In this class, you will be presented with a series of lessons which will help you learn to SEE the world as it really is and to build your skill as you learn how to render objects in graphite, charcoal, and ink. Exercises will include Blind Contour Drawing, drawing cylinders, Value, Perspective, Negative Space, and more (don’t worry if you don’t know what those are - you will soon enough!) By the end of the class, you’ll be delighted by your newfound abilities and will feel remarkably solid in your ability to draw what you see before you.

Monday evenings, 6:30 – 9 PM, 8/3 - 9/14, 6 weeks with no class Labor Day, $240 plus $10 supply fee. Please email SusanSingerArt@msn.com to sign up or learn more. Minimum 6 students, Maximum 10. Classes are held at Susan’s home studio near Trader Joe’s Southside. Please read the cancellation/refund policy below before signing up. Thank you.

“I am a rank beginner but Susan, born teacher that she is, has more patience with me than I have with myself.   I’ve learned a lot in her classes and would highly recommend!” ….Jean Salter”

BEGINNING WATERCOLOR

Painting in watercolor can be quite complicated if you dive in headfirst and try to paint a complex photograph, for example. That’s way too overwhelming, in my humble opinion!
Instead of throwing you off that deep end, I break down the skills you'll need into clearly defined, fairly simple exercises which each teach 1-2 skills. Each skill is taught within the parameter of fun, interesting, and/or beautiful exercises like the one seen here:

By the end of the class, you'll have a set of skills which can be combined to approach a more complicated picture or to paint Urban Sketches, for example. You'll feel confident that you understand how to use the materials well and how to apply them to achieve your desired results.

Thursday mornings, 10 - 12:30, 8/6 - 9/10, 6 weeks, maximum 10 students, minimum 6. $240 + $10 for materials. Please email SusanSingerArt@msn.com to sign up or learn more. Classes are held at Susan’s home studio near Trader Joe’s Southside. (Please read the Cancellation policy below before signing up! Thank you.)

OPEN STUDIO

Open Studio offers you an opportunity to explore projects you are interested in. It is great for students who have been doing art for long enough to have the basics down, who know what they want to work on, and who would like individual instruction as needed to continue to progress in their art journey. Most students work in watercolor, but you are welcome to work in any medium you prefer.

It’s a relaxed, encouraging, welcoming environment, perfect for anyone who wants to make art and needs a set time and place to do it.

Class is already almost full, so sign up ASAP if you’re interested!
