Crossroads Art Center’s Juried AMS are open to mid-Atlantic artists through a bimonthly call for entries, and cash prizes are awarded for the winners. Each show is juried by a prominent art professional from the community (a gallery director, curator, museum official, arts professor, or accomplished artist). Cash awards are given for 1st $100, 2nd $75, and 3rd $50 place winners. The 2024-2025 AMS shows are exhibited at Crossroads Art Center and as online exhibitions where customers can shop directly from the website.

What is a Juried Show? Should I enter?

A juried show is a competitive event, designed for artists who would like to see how their work stands up to that of other entrants. Many artists feel that getting into a juried show improves their resume or satisfies their desire to win approval for their work.

Who should enter a juried show?

• Artists prepared for a competitive event in which not everyone will be chosen
• Artists who will use their participation as a tool for thinking critically and tactically about making and exhibiting their art:
  • How does my work represent me?
  • Is what I’m doing with my art right for me?
  • How does my work compare to that of other artists whose work deals with a similar interest/subject/medium?
  • What could I learn that would help me improve my work?

Who decides whether my entry is included?

Arts professionals selected from the Richmond vibrant arts community, usually consisting of a gallerist or museum professional, and a working studio artist.

How will I know if my entry was selected?

You will receive an email via artcall.org to let you know if your pieces were selected to be shown Live & Online, Online Only or not selected for the exhibit. If you do not receive an email, you may email us at crossroadsartcenter@gmail.com to find out if your work was selected.

What does it mean if my entry is not selected?

Resist thinking the worst! Being said “no” to is a basic part of showing and selling art. It’s not the result you’re hoping for, but you can learn from it. You might realize, as you look at similar pieces that were selected for the show, that your entry could have been improved upon, but often, the selection of one piece over another is a matter of balancing the show, or the juror’s opinion

Some categories of work are more competitive than others due to the number of entries. For example, landscapes in oil will have more competition than life-sized equestrian bronzes.

Will I be told why my entry was or was not selected?

It’s not viable to record jurors’ comments for each entrant. The jurors will provide a general written statement about their impressions of the entries, and some comments about what they looked for in making their selections, but specific information regarding individual entries will not be available

If my entry is not selected, will I receive a refund of my entry fee?

You will have received the service for which the entry fee was charged: your work was set out among the other entries, considered for inclusion in the exhibit, and, if not selected, held for you to pick up. The fee is a jurying fee, not a showing fee.

IMPORTANT READ! Do’s and Don’ts for Submitting Artwork

To ensure a smooth, fair, and professional exhibition process for all artists, the following guidelines must be observed when entering artwork into a gallery call for entries. Submission to a call for entries indicates agreement with these policies.

DO’S

• Do submit artwork that is fully available.
  All artwork entered into a call for entries must be taken off the market at the time of submission. This includes removal from other galleries, exhibitions, retail locations, online marketplaces, personal websites, and social media sales platforms.
• Do retrieve work from other galleries prior to entry.
  If a piece is currently on display, consignment, or pending sale at another gallery or venue, it must be physically retrieved and fully available before submitting it to this call for entries.
• Do keep artwork off the market during the jurying process.
  Submitted artwork must remain unavailable for sale elsewhere until the artist has been formally notified whether the piece has been juried into the exhibition.
• Do ensure accuracy and readiness.
  Submitted images, titles, dimensions, medium, and pricing must be accurate and reflect the actual work that would be delivered if accepted.

DON’TS

• Do not submit artwork that is simultaneously for sale elsewhere.
  Artwork may not be actively marketed, sold, or exhibited in another venue while under consideration for this exhibition.
• Do not assume availability if the work is “unlikely” to sell.
  Even if a piece is rarely purchased or is on passive display elsewhere, it must still be removed from all other markets prior to submission.
• Do not submit artwork you cannot commit to delivering.
  If an accepted piece is no longer available due to sale, loan, or prior commitment, the gallery reserves the right to remove the artist from the exhibition and/or future calls.

Important Note

These policies protect the integrity of the exhibition, the jurying process, and the gallery’s relationship with collectors. They ensure that all accepted artwork is available, professional, and presented on equal footing. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in disqualification from the current call for entries and may affect eligibility for future exhibitions.

DECLINING AN ACCEPTANCE:

We have a limit for the number of pieces that can be accepted into a show. This can vary, based on sizes of entry pieces, and what the juror wants. It is a privilege to have work selected for a show. 
If your work is selected, that means that someone else's work was not. You may delete an entry anytime before the end of the Call for Entries. 
After that time, your inability to provide THAT piece for the show will result in the work being removed from our Online Sales, and the artist will not be allowed to enter future juried shows. 

AI RESTRICTIONS:

The ability of the artist to express themselves through paint is a magnificent gift accomplished with much thought, practice and patience. As such, we as an organization choose to advance those works which are created solely from the artist’s essential nature and efforts. The use of references that are not the sole source of the artist are not, therefore, acceptable in our exhibitions. The artist who can conceive, plan and execute a totally original work of art is in our opinion the highest caliber of artist.

New technology may perhaps make it easier to convert your ideas into visual images, but AI conceived images are not original to the artist, they are original to AI.

We have added the following policy to our Call For Entry Procedures:

"Artists MUST use their own photo references when creating their artwork.  The use of any AI generated images, professional photographed images, other artist’s images, instructor’s images or photographs taken by another individual, is STRICTLY prohibited unless you have permission by the professional photographer, artist or instructor to use the images. You must also give them credit as the artist, unless you have permission by the professional photographer, artist or instructor to use the images. You must also give them credit as the artist.  

Should we determine that an artist has violated this policy, the offending artist will NOT be eligible to participate in CAC online or gallery exhibitions for a period of two (2) years.  Any award for the infringing artwork will also be revoked. 

This policy safeguards the integrity of CAC and protects the individual artist from potential copyright infringement.  CAC assumes no legal liability for violations of copyright of another individual’s material, or intellectual property rights.”

All Media is accepted for entry in this exhibit. Accepted work will be shown LIVE at Crossroads Art Center, as well as Online on the website.

There is no theme for this exhibition.  This is a juried show.

Juror: Doug Mock, Board President of the RAL Art Center in Kilmarnock, VA  

Doug Mock is an award-winning watercolor artist and teacher living in White Stone, Virginia. Born in 1966 in Central Pennsylvania he was raised in a small dairy farming community where strong work ethic, love of family and appreciation of nature were of major importance. Doug is mostly self-taught, with significant influence by figurative watercolorist Mary Whyte. Mock creates art inspired by people and nature. His work is characterized by unique design, bold color and creative subject matter. Capturing life’s simple moments, Doug’s art connects with collectors on an emotional level. Doug has been juried into and regularly appears in shows and exhibitions throughout the United States. His work is appreciated and can be found in private collections throughout the country. He is a member of prominent watercolor organizations and is a signature member of the Virginia Watercolor Society and the Southern Watercolor Society.

"I paint watercolors that awaken memories of our youthful exuberance and happiness.  People in their natural environment inspire all that I love as an artist.  I capture life's simplicity and innocence by using the beauty and playfulness of color and light to bring you joy...to make you smile!"

Doug is also the Board President of the RAL Art Center in Kilmarnock, VA.  The Rappahannock Art League has served Virginia’s Northern Neck for 77 years and in 2024 was able to purchase a second Main Street location that is being transformed into a dedicated art education space to include a full-service ceramics studio, a youth studio, a teen studio and an expanded adult and senior studio which will also double as a community rental space for private and business rentals.  RAL began their Art for All capital campaign in November of 2026 and is currently $300,000 shy of achieving their financial goal to fully transform their art center and their community.  Doug's jury fee will be given to RAL to support this capital campaign.  If you are interested in supporting their campaign, please visit www.ralartforall.com and to learn more about RAL please visit www.ralartcenter.com.

Cornucopia — An Exhibition of Abundance, Harvest & Creative Plenty

Crossroads Art Center invites artists to celebrate the richness of life, creativity, and seasonal bounty in “Cornucopia,” a themed exhibition inspired by the symbol of overflowing abundance. Traditionally tied to harvest celebrations, the cornucopia represents nourishment, gratitude, generosity, and the beauty found in nature’s plenty.

This show embraces all interpretations of abundance—literal, symbolic, emotional, or abstract. From harvest imagery and natural textures to metaphorical fullness, personal prosperity, vibrant color palettes, or overflowing composition, we welcome artwork that speaks to richness in all its forms.

Theme Inspiration

• Harvest scenes, fruits, vegetables, florals, and natural bounty

• Textures of autumn, orchards, fields, seasons, and earth

• Symbols of gratitude, generosity, and abundance

• Still life arrangements bursting with color and form

• Metaphorical or emotional “fullness”

2027 Gallery Members Exhibits Call for Entries

Greetings, Crossroads Gallery Members and Artists in Residence!

I wanted to share some important changes coming in 2027 regarding our All-Media Exhibitions and Gallery Members Exhibitions.

As Crossroads continues to evaluate our exhibition programs, we want to ensure we are using our gallery spaces and resources in ways that best support our artists, encourage participation, and make financial sense for the Art Center.

1. All Media Exhibitions will be discontinued in 2027.

We will no longer host the All-Media Exhibitions. Unfortunately, these shows have not been financially sustainable, and over the past year, our Artists in Residence have essentially been helping cover the costs associated with maintaining the exhibition space.

2. Gallery Members Exhibitions will continue throughout 2027.

The good news is that our Gallery Members Exhibitions will continue! Since the majority of artists participating in the All-Media Shows are already Gallery Members, we do not anticipate this being a significant change for most of you.

To encourage even greater participation and give artists more flexibility in what they submit, the Gallery Members Exhibitions will not have themes until the Fall 2027 shows.

3. We are expanding the Gallery Members exhibition space.

Gallery Members Exhibitions will now have access to even more display space in Building 3. Exhibitions will include walls and spaces in the front room of Building 3, where the All-Media Show is currently displayed, in addition to the classroom and Hallway Gallery.

This will give us an opportunity to create larger, more diverse exhibitions showcasing the work of our Gallery Members.

4. Artists may enter up to two pieces per exhibition.

Gallery Members will be able to submit up to two pieces for each Gallery Members Exhibition.

For our Annual Gallery Members Exhibition in July, artists will be able to submit up to three pieces.

And remember—all submitted artwork will be displayed!

5. We are adding an in-person submission option.

Beginning in 2027, we will designate a specific Sunday for in-person submissions for each Gallery Members Exhibition.

Artwork submitted in person will be exhibited in the gallery only and will not appear online.

Artists who submit through ArtCall will continue to have their artwork displayed both in the gallery and online, just as they do now.

We hope these changes will make our Gallery Members Exhibitions even stronger, provide more opportunities for our members to participate, and allow us to make better use of the wonderful exhibition space available in Building 3.

Most importantly, thank you for allowing Crossroads Art Center to represent, exhibit, and share your artwork. Your participation and continued support make these exhibitions possible, and we truly appreciate being able to showcase the incredible variety of work created by our artistic community.

Theme: NATURE

Nature is all around us — in the grandest landscapes and the smallest details. For this Gallery Members Exhibition, we invite artists to explore NATURE in all its beauty, complexity, power, and wonder.

Your inspiration might come from a sweeping mountain vista, a quiet forest, the movement of water, a brilliant sunset, or the changing seasons. Look closer and you may discover inspiration in the delicate structure of a leaf, the texture of tree bark, the pattern of a shell, the colors of a garden, or the wings of an insect.

Nature can also be interpreted beyond what we see. Consider growth and decay, weather and climate, transformation, the relationship between humans and the natural world, or the emotions and memories that a particular place evokes.

Realistic, abstract, whimsical, contemporary, traditional, or somewhere in between—we want to see your interpretation of NATURE.

Landscapes, flora, fauna, oceans, rivers, skies, gardens, wildlife, natural patterns, organic forms, and the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—are just the beginning.

For our Richmond – “Go Local” Gallery Member Exhibit, we invite artists to explore what Richmond means to you.

Capture the Richmond everyone recognizes—or show us the Richmond only you know.

Think beyond traditional cityscapes! Your inspiration might come from the James River, Richmond’s bridges and skyline, historic architecture, neighborhood streets, local businesses, restaurants, music, gardens, parks, sports, festivals, murals, favorite gathering places, or the people and personalities who give our city its spirit.

Gallery Member Exhibit – Theme: Patterns

Patterns are everywhere—woven into nature, architecture, textiles, movement, color, and the rhythms of everyday life.

For this Gallery Members Exhibition, Crossroads Art Center invites artists to explore PATTERNS in all their forms. Look for repetition, rhythm, symmetry, geometry, texture, and design—or break the pattern entirely!

Your inspiration might come from the repeating petals of a flower, ripples across water, rows of city windows, shadows on a sidewalk, fabric and quilts, mosaics and tiles, animal markings, abstract shapes, or patterns created simply through line and color.

Patterns can be bold or subtle, orderly or chaotic, natural or man-made, traditional or completely unexpected.
