GENERAL INFORMATION
Susan Singer's teaching philosophy involves offering you, the student, a rich, engaging, fun, encouraging, resource-laden adventure as you begin or continue your creative journey. She recognizes it can feel intimidating to begin to learn a new skill as an adult, so, especially in the Beginning classes, she teaches discrete skills in a way that they can be learned then mastered. From there, you will learn other skills, and eventually, you'll be able to combine them to create drawings and paintings that will amaze you!

URBAN SKETCHING

Urban Sketching is a catchy name for going out into the world and sketching what you see arrayed before you. It could be indoors or outdoors, full of people or not, in good weather or bad (though if we don’t have good weather, we’ll go indoors!). In this class, you’ll meet the first week at Susan Singer’s house to learn the ropes and discuss materials. For the next five weeks, you’ll meet at various locations around Richmond to paint the beautiful sights. Locations could include such places as Maymont, VMFA, Hollywood Cemetery, etc.
You’ll have a chance to use your drawing and watercolor skills as you render the buildings and natural views around Richmond. The instructor will offer you support as you decide what to draw and how to go about it. She’ll offer lessons in perspective, color, painting outdoors, and/or more as needed. It’s a great opportunity to get outdoors and do art while meeting lovely people who enjoy doing the same!
Monday mornings, 5/4 – 6/8, 6 weeks, 10am – 12:30 pm, location will vary from week to week. Minimum 6 students, maximum 12. Please contact her at SusanSingerArt@msn.com to sign up or to learn more. Please read the cancellation policy below before signing up. Thank you.
OPEN STUDIO

In this friendly, welcoming class, you will have the opportunity to work on your own projects at your own pace in any medium with the support of Susan Singer. The emphasis will be on helping you find your own artistic voice in whatever medium(s) you choose to use.
Each of us has something unique to add to the world and our own beautiful way of expressing it. If you are already on your creative journey and your form of expression is visual, this may be just the right place for you to further explore and experiment and discover how to let your inner Self out onto the paper/canvas.
Susan will offer you prompts and inspiration if you want those or will leave you to your own musings if you prefer. She will be there to answer questions and offer support as needed. In the past, students have said [Susan is] “always upbeat and encouraging. She values the artist in each student!” “Susan is an inspiration. She makes you believe you can do anything.”
Tuesday mornings, May 12 – June 8, 6 weeks. Cost is $240 + $10 materials fee. Classes are held at Susan Singer’s home studio behind Trader Joe’s Southside. Minimum 6 students, maximum 12. Painting in watercolor can be quite complicated if you dive in headfirst and try to paint a complex photograph, for example. That’s way too overwhelming, in my humble opinion!
Instead of throwing you off that deep end, I break down the skills you'll need into clearly defined, fairly simple exercises which each teach 1-2 skills. Each skill is taught within the parameter of fun, interesting, and/or beautiful exercises like the one seen here.
By the end of the class, you'll have a set of skills which can be combined to approach a more complicated picture or to paint Urban Sketches, for example. You'll feel confident that you understand how to use the materials well and how to apply them to achieve your desired results.
Wednesday evenings, 5/6 – 6/10, 6 weeks, maximum 12 students, minimum 6. $240 + $10 for materials. Reply to this email to sign up or for more information. (Please read the Cancellation policy below before signing up! Thank you.)
