A trip to Alaska and exposure to its native artwork inspired me to create a swirling fish sculpture using my mediums of wood and leather. Using flat metal bar and a handy tree, I finally achieved the swirling effect needed to create the movement of Ivan, my tribute to Alaska.

Artist Statement:

A native of Long Island, NY, I began developing my leather working skills in 1971 while I was still in the U.S. Navy. I was originally inspired to try my hand at leatherwork after being given a handmade leather belt by a friend. Shortly after receiving the belt, I happened upon some antique leather working tools in a pawn shop. Thus began my 54-year fascination with leather art.

Over the years, I found inspiration to try my hand at making a wide variety of leather art. Each has challenged me to expand my skill set as I set out to do something few, if any, had tried before. My goal has always been to push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship when working with my leather. Stepping outside the traditional interpretation of leatherwork, I have experimented with different forms, colors, finishes, and functions with my leather art.

I always enjoy seeing the reactions of folks who come to see my work at art shows. I hear their comments of “Beautiful!” and “This is leather?” But best of all, I love to hear them say, “I didn’t know you could do this with leather!” Mission accomplished.
