Barbara Trovillo, Contemporary Impressionist

It is the wonder of the natural world that inspires my creative work. I live with my husband in an old house in the country, surrounded by mountains, trees, fields, and beautiful skies, with no near human neighbors.  We do share the land with plenty of wildlife. Frequent visitors are egrets, foxes, possums, mice, deer, and groundhogs. We hear the coyotes, see the evidence of a bear now and then, and have the occasional bobcat walk down the drive.  When we are not here, we go to the water where the waterfowl and waves offer fresh inspiration.

I try to paint every day. I started with watercolor and still work with the medium, especially when I travel. I prefer oil paint now. I love the buttery texture of oil. The tactile experience of swiping paint onto canvas is a thrill. I use a variety of tools in the process: paint knives, Rosemary & Co. brushes, squeegees, etc. Texture is created with thick oil paint, adding a bit of cold wax to the paint or walnut oil when necessary. Color is used to manipulate light and shadow, making suggestions with gestural marks, while leaving something to the imagination. There is a story behind every piece. A collector’s impression of that story is not always the same as mine and that is part of the fun!

At the core of my commitment to art is a childlike delight in the beauty of God's creation. Painting is a joy and a passion for me. I am grateful and privileged to be able to do work that I love.
