I've been using Intentional Camera Movement (ICM). ICM creates images that take me to different times from the river's past. This photo was taken on March 22, 2026. On March 22, 1622, a coordinated attack by Indian tribes along the James River killed over 300 settlers, and I imagine the morning started something like this one.

Artist's Statement:

It’s 600 years ago. It’s right now, twilight. The atmosphere is magical, evoking thoughts of time, distance, and memory. The eyes adjust and the faint light of horizon blurs with the busy skies, creating a scene rich with colors of unfamiliar blues and near-black greens. Starlight and time, belonging and being, all merge in the moment and your deepest thoughts awaken.

My recent photography is taking me on a journey. Many journeys. By boat and by foot. Yesterday. Today. Hundreds of years ago. Indians, painters, trappers, sailors and fisherman all pass by me within the frames of these photos.

Even though I am aware these images have just been created, they take me seamlessly into the river’s past and its ageless beauty. The history and opportunity for discovery is always there. But never more so than at the early hour where the day arises and throws off its blanket of night.
