Eric Douglass

Eric Douglass worked in high-end fine cabinetry for 40 years. Out of this, Eric developed the idea of putting intarsia tops into the lids of wood boxes. He already had most of the skills involved, and spent the next 5 years focused on creating designs and perfecting his technique. Eric began to sell works in early 2026.

Artist Statement
My technique is intarsia. I begin with an original drawing, cutting this pattern into a ‘base wood’ using a scroll saw. The subject pieces, such as a flower or shell, are removed from the base wood, and then cut from other varieties of wood. These are fitted into the base wood, and shaped using a spindle sander and carving tools. These pieces are glued to a backerboard and placed in a handmade box. The boxes are constructed of red oak, with a half-inch lip into which the intarsia fits. The lid is attached with an inset piano hinge.
