Kerstin Stiller

Artist Statement:
Kerstin Stiller is an abstract artist whose work is shaped by a deep relationship with structure and perception. Trained as a mechanical engineer and influenced by nearly two decades of living in Virginia after growing up in East Germany, she brings an analytical way of seeing into the act of painting. Her process begins with recognizable forms – faces, symbols, or familiar subjects – which she methodically breaks down into pixel-like units. An uneven layer of texture is the base to create vibration, movement, and depth with those tiny squares.
Stiller’s work invites viewers to slow down and participate. As the eye moves across the artwork, the brain fills in what is missing, creating a personal, shifting experience of the image. This balance between control and freedom mirrors her own journey: from engineering to art, from one country to another. Her paintings are not about what is seen at first glance, but about perception, memory, and the quiet tension between colors.
