The inspiration for this piece was a critically endangered Red Wolf I observed at Mill Mountain Zoo in Roanoke, Virginia. Once native to Virginia, less than 30 individuals now exist in the wild with approximately 280 in captivity.
Artist's Statement:
I am a self-taught, nature and wildlife artist with a focus on eco-friendly materials. Inspired by nature, my work highlights the beauty of common plants and animals often overlooked as we go about our daily routines. To honor my natural subjects, I am working to make art in a more environmentally friendly way. In my oil paintings, I have eliminated traditional solvents and utilize sustainably harvested earth, organic, or historical powder pigments which I hand mix with refined walnut oil. Free of fillers, additives, and heavy metals, these pure pigments provide radiant color while maintaining excellent archival quality. In addition, I am currently exploring natural acrylic paints, canvas made from recycled cotton, and use of vintage and repurposed papers.
