Steve Hedberg
About the artist:
From drawing Saturday morning cartoon characters and robots to painting a landscape or an abstract titled “Intersection in Red no. 2”, Richmond artist Steve Hedberg has never not known what he wanted to do with his life.
Hedberg is visually stimulated by the colors and textures of our everyday environment and gravitates toward the ordinary and underappreciated. He focuses mainly on urban landscapes and rural scenes of Richmond and rural Virginia. Hedberg thrives in immersive experiences and considers painting his way of telling unique stories and documenting our habitat. Hedberg’s artwork has been featured in numerous solo exhibits and is represented in corporate and public collections.
Hedberg paints primarily with oil paints on wood panel and canvas. He’s fascinated with color theory and light. A strong light source, direct midday sunlight is important to his landscapes since the heavy shadows punch up the realism with contrast and a bright color palette. More recently, he’s explored variations in lighting and weather, such as overcast and night skies as well as fog and snow.
The evolution of Hedberg’s body of work is as important to his creative process as painting an individual piece. The process is an exploration, and he finds that the more he gets lost, the better he is at finding his way back.
