Alternative Firing - Glaze/Salt Firing

Artist's Statement:

My work is influenced by my Japanese heritage and surrounding environment. The created compositions are reminiscent of my family’s home in Japan ¾ extremely visual and tactile. I experiment with a range of design, textures, and glaze applications. I approach my work by manipulating contrasting colors, shapes, and patterns to create cohesive compositions. The immediate, physical interaction with clay constantly challenges me to push to the next level. My ceramic work is predominately created by alternative firings such as the Japanese inspired raku firings and barrel/pit firings.

In November 2017, my work was featured in a trunk show at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts during the opening weekend of Terracotta Army: Legacy of the First Emperor of China. The following month, my ceramics were part of the Artisan Display: Handcrafted Stories exhibit at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in December 2017. My work was part of the CURRENT Art Fair in Richmond, Virginia (October 2019). CURRENT, Richmond's first contemporary art fair, featured works from local, national, and internationally recognized artists. Over the years, my work has been juried in numerous all-media art shows including in the Workhouse International Clay Invitational (Fairfax, VA) in 2018.
