White Lights Over Thule, Greenland
8" x 10"
Acrylic on Panel
This piece was recently painted from memory, back in the days when I was in the USAF. Thule (pronounced too-ly) is a small inhabited settlement. There is also a USAF Base on the outskirts of the settlement. While I was not stationed at the base, I did have the good fortune to land there for refueling. The white lights were reflections from the immense flightline lights that helped guide landings of C130 cargo planes. The work is painted in a vivid expressionist style and comes beautifully framed in gold leaf.
