Artist's Statement:
I’d like to say I was inspired by a calling of some unknown force to become a potter, but actually I fell into it quite by accident. A friend twisted my arm into taking a pottery class and I was hooked.
A native Richmonder, I’d been a teacher, business owner, an active animal advocate (currently a responder with the ASPCA, HSUSI, Louisa CART) and conducted “Nature’s Image Photography Workshops” for 24 years until Covid. But pottery survived.
A renowned potter once told me that he’d never had a creative idea. He built from the ideas of others. This gave me pause but also opened more possibilities. I enjoy diversity: thrown and hand built pieces, functional, sculptural, Lamps; Sager, Raku, low and high firing, wood and salt firings and carving on my pieces. My works are in several shops and I sell from my home which is open daily by appointment. I hold an open Open House twice a year. 70% of all proceeds goes to animal rescues.
Clay anchors me to the earth. It helps me breathe deeply. It inspires me to see the often unnoticed. I feel its life within my fingers as we push and pull together. I’ve always found balance in nature. Clay plays a big part in both.
