Bigleaf Burl 1
20 x 16 x 2"
Decayed Wood and Resin
$350
My artwork displays the beauty that is hidden within partially-decayed trees that would otherwise be destined for the firewood pile. The patterns of fungal discoloration ("spalting") contained within this Oregon-grown bigleaf maple tree are some of the most complex and beautiful that I have ever seen.
Artist's Statement:
I am a self-taught woodworker and artist based in Richmond, VA. My artwork reveals the beauty that is hidden within partially-decayed trees that would otherwise be destined for the firewood pile. These cross-sectional displays of wood show the growth rings that were created when the tree was alive, as well as the patterns of bug holes and fungal discoloration (known as “spalting”) that were created after the tree died. The pieces are therefore able to convey the full lifecycle of a tree - from growth and vitality in life, to a supporter of ecosystems in death, and now to re-birth as a piece of art: a collaboration between man and nature. My hope is that my art gives nature-lovers a novel way to appreciate the mysterious wonder and beauty of trees.
