Roberto, a horse from Eqqumarka, has been built with four layers of clay. The first three create the structure, the last, is a very textured surface. The slab, gets the stain in powder, brushed. The first layers are cut and built leather hard, and the drying very carefully maintained. Glazed to cone 5.
Artist's Statement:
I believe all my work in clay reflects my background as an architect from Peru. I changed careers when I came to US, but playing with design is always in my heart.
I build my pieces with slabs used as structural components; that is how my horses are a reminiscence of gothic columns. My lamps are little buildings with walls and windows to let the light through.
Each of my pieces is an experiment: with different clays, different firing and color techniques, structuring different creatures and textures. I work the structure first, then I try different textures and firings; at the beginning I did a lot of raku firings, now, I do wood firings: I use a barrel contraption and other ways. I still use regular cone firings, specifically for the containers; I collect rare plants, so, I create containers to go with their specific characters ????
I love ancient cultures; many times, I make my objects look like old relics found in a ruin. There is a story to go with that.
All my pieces are works in progress, as I am. More than anything I believe clay is playing with mud, and what can be wrong with that?
