The Spirited

The Spirited balances stability and movement, contrasting a spherical form with dynamic glaze transitions and incised textures. Layers of green, gold, and black evoke weathered landscapes shaped by time. Oxidation firing deepens the glazes, blending material transformation with artistic control to explore form and surface evolution.

Artist's Statement:

I am Runhui Xu, a ceramic artist originally from Jingdezhen, China—the "Porcelain Capital of the World." A recent immigrant, I bring with me the rich ceramic heritage of my hometown while exploring new artistic directions in a global context. A graduate of Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design (2001), I have spent over two decades shaping contemporary ceramics.

My work moves beyond function, embracing the natural movement of clay and the depth of its glaze. The undulating ridges and shifting hues create a rhythmic flow, dissolving the boundary between motion and structure. In this balance, my vessels embody both continuity and transformation, carrying a timeless presence.

As a member of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC) under UNESCO, my works have been exhibited internationally at institutions such as the Chester Beatty (Dublin), Korea Craft & Design Center (Seoul), Tsinghua University Art Museum (Beijing), and Museo Querini Stampalia (Venice). My pieces are part of major academic and art collections, including the Chester Beatty Library, Lingnan Fine Art Museum, and Shandong Art Museum.
