Inspired by a road trip through Kingston, Ontario, and a roadside sign honoring The Tragically Hip (a Canadian rock band formed there in the 1980s), Toujours Hip captures the raw vitality of the Canadian landscape. Using photographs as a springboard, I layer expressive acrylics using a dynamic palette that brings the energy of outdoor landscapes inside. The music, audiobooks, and podcasts that I listen to in my studio greatly influence the painting's outcome so that the final piece evokes the feelings of the place and also the experience of creating it—an intuitive dialogue of sound, feeling, memory, and terrain.
