Imagine a country gentleman driving his horse-drawn carriage home to Cherry Hill. William Fleming built this home around 1820 on 400 acres bordering the South Anna River in Hanover County, Virginia. Discovered artifacts by the river indicate occupation by a Monacan Indian town from 2,500 B.C.

Artist's Statement:

I am in awe of the diversity and beauty of places on our earth. I feel fortunate to have traveled to places, both man-made and untouched by human hands. I have seen where ancient civilizations carved into caves and the sides of mountains; and I have seen magnificent, enduring cathedrals and castles built with technologies we now consider primitive. While most of my landscape paintings reflect places near my home in the 21st century, I am reminded that the civilization of the United States, which resides on ancient land, is still in its infancy compared to most other places on earth. My paintings are a record of my own journey, but perhaps also “our” journey.
