This form is meant to be a modernized, corrupted simulation of a tree. A tree that has been calcified and crystalized, much like a bleached coral reef, has a familiar shape but has been transformed to appear ghostly and transparent by time and the interference of modern human existence.

Artist's Statement:

My artwork's conceptual core is the translation of the complex and mystical into the understandable, or the alien to the understood. Using the guiding principle of “biological mysticism”, I create dubious alien biological forms to provide a level of suspended belief in the fictive nature of the alien forms present in my sculptural works. Large, cavernous rock forms and delicate bone-colored vessels all place my work in the identifiable world, only to subvert through the inclusion of vibrant colorings and protruding crystalline growths.
As someone who deals with a long-term autoimmune illness, I see a link between medical treatment and the quest to fully understand the body's functions, which inspires me to make alien-like sculptures. Viewing my works as the proxies for my own body, the investigation and reinterpretations of fictive biologies mirror the ways medical intervention has sought to intervene and manipulate my own body and health. " I am currently working and living in Richmond, VA and I am a recipient of the 2024-2025 VMFA Professional Fellowship. I earned a BFA in Sculpture and a BA in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2024.
