Sun drenches this painting of Baie Rouge Beach on Saint Martin. While beautiful and peaceful at first glance, waves chew and tear at the shore; and in the background, ruined houses and rugged stone attest the occasional violence of the sea. A storm hovers in the distance.

Artist's Statement:

Joel Sprinkle is a self-taught painter from Southwestern Virginia. His artwork dwells on ephemeral beauty—insects, animals, a building at a specific time with a specific light, and reflections all form his favorite subjects. His work exhibits realistic tendencies, although he allows a painterly approach to tinge some aspects in order to emphasize the role of personal interpretation.
