Glacier Lagoon and the Red Parka

I painted this to remember that magical moment when ancient glaciers still exist, the Icelandic landscape remains wild and epic, and the only thing ruining this timeless vision is a woman in a red parka with her smartphone.
Artist's Statement:
I paint the places I love—Highland Scotland, Maine, Charlottesville, Tokyo, Iceland, and ask them politely to sit still while I chase the light in oil paint.
My subjects are ordinary streets, harbors, and shrines and forests that have agreed to dress up as memories—foggy, snow-dusted, or lit by neon and lanterns—so that someone looking at them thinks, “I’ve never been there, but I kind of remember it anyway.” When the painting finally stops arguing with me about edges and values, I wipe the paint off my hands, call it finished, and immediately start another one so I can repeat the whole ridiculous process.
