Richard Upton
Richard Upton is a fine art and mixed media photographer whose works often merge
traditional photography with mixed media images.
An academically trained studio artist with a career in advertising and graphic design,
Dick began exploring the world of juried art shows and gallery exhibitions in 2023.
Over the past four years, he has developed a unique ink-over-ink printing process that
he refers to as Progressive Frame Imaging (PFI). Through PFI, his works are created
through the aggregation of disparate mixed media images printed sequentially. Not
dissimilar to traditional ink-over-ink printing processes such as lithography, serigraphy,
etching or woodblock block, PFI-created compositions replace stone, metal plates,
wood, and screens with digital printers. No single digital image exists for a PFI printed
composition. In the case of Upton’s work, all mixed media images are created by the
artist through photography, illustration, painting, pen and ink, chalk pastels and alcohol-
based ink brushes and markers.
In addition to his mixed media photographic works, he continues to explore traditional
fine art photography and graphic design.
