Her paintings are often landscapes reflecting life in the Chesapeake Bay watershed based upon decades of photography.
Her love of photography led the way to studio art which she began to explore in drawing classes with Marjorie Perrin at the Virginian Museum of Fine Art in 1994. Later classes in painting resulted in her long - term study of oil painting with several instructors in Virginia as well as other states and countries through the years. In order to understand better painting materials and techniques, Susan attended the Loughcrew School in Ireland with Emily Dashwood Naper who also taught the use of varnish, glazing and mixing pigments. Susan often designs and finishes the frames for her paintings. Two teachers whom she credits with the most positive influence in her growth as a painter are Curney Nuffer of Richmond, VA and Dawn Whitelaw of Franklin, TN, especially Plein air painting.
She is a 25 year veteran of the Nimrod Hall Summer Art Program in Bath County, VA currently owned and operated by artist Laura Loe and many of her paintings are a reflection of the mountains and rivers , farms and pastures near the camp in Millboro Springs, VA. Susan works with Curney Nuffer year round when he teaches painting classes at the Crossroads Art Center in Richmond where they both exhibit year-round as well as in other galleries throughout Virginia. She accepts commissions.
