Susan Dull

Educated at Collegiate School in Richmond, Susan attended Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg as an art history/literature major with a minor in photography. She spent a year at the University of Reading in Berkshire, England, and there studied with John Kenworthy-Brown (19th century British art and architecture) and at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London with Linda Nocklin.

Photography has been a life-long interest and led the way to oil painting, which Susan began in 1990. After nearly 30 years of photography and darkroom work, Susan began taking classes in drawing and painting at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Studio School and the Hand Workshop. Susan has also taken classes with the late Ross Merrill, director of conservation at the National Gallery and a noted landscape painter. Since 2005, she has painted at the Nimrod Hall Summer Arts Program in Bath County, Virginia, and studies at Crossroads Art Center with Curney Nuffer.

Susan paints landscapes (including en plein air) and still life. Her paintings hang in collections from Virginia to California, including in the Federal Reserve Bank Collection. Her work can be seen year-round in the North Light Gallery in Crossroads Art Center and with other Richmond artists as part of ARTspeaks, a local group which supports charitable organizations through art. Her most recent series is entitled “Shorebirds,” and she has painted commissioned pet portraits for five years.
