Troy Bunch

ARTIST INTERVIEW:

The artworks of Troy Bunch might be described as whimsical, and thought provoking. His recognizable paintings, typically depicting women, are often a blend of surrealism and realism. Troy has been involved in the arts since his youth, eventually rising to higher ranks as an Art Director which remained his career until recently retiring. “Now that I am retired I can finally create the art that I want to create. It was a fun job but you never got to make what you want, and now I do.” Now Troy spends every day in his studio developing new artistic ideas and perfecting his craft.

Having spent most of his career in Illustration, it is apparent where Troy find inspiration for his artworks. “I always admired illustrators like Richard Corbin, Michael Wayland, and Frank Frazetta who did figurative and nude paintings. I really admired the way he created the figure, with motion and movement.” Troy blends his passion for illustration, and creative mindset, to create otherworldly settings for each painting. “I always try to put some element in the painting that is not real, I want to create that wow factor.”

Like many artists, throughout the years Troy’s creative process has evolved, particularly with advancements in technology. Troy’s compositions often start with images of models, then he imagines the figure in a more whimsical setting. “When I first started out they didn’t have computers so you were just creating in your mind. Now I use my computer to move elements around until I get it just the way I want it to look.” Once finalized, he will put paintbrush to canvas, striving to be as realistic and technically accurate as possible.

For Troy, the key to success is in the practice. “That's how I look at life too, you have to practice all throughout your life and hope you get better at everything. Hold onto those learning experiences and grow from them.”
