Aquamarine Oyster Platter
1.5 x 16 x 16"
Fused Glass
$225
I love oysters and used real oyster shells to make the plaster molds that were used to create this oyster tray. It was a two step process to form the molds and took two firings to create this platter. This represents my interest in the ocean and all things related to it. And also how to used natural materials in the creation of art. To me this platter is not only usable but is also a piece for display.
Artist's Statement:
Over the years, I have worked in many media. But my art glass adventure started when I retired from art education. As an elementary and middle school art teacher, I always loved opening the clay kiln to see what my students had produced. It was like Christmas morning. I also love color and found working with the transparency and fluidity of watercolor to be particularly interesting and stimulating. With the combination of these two attributes, the color and transparency of watercolor and the excitement of opening the kiln, I have both in the art of glass fusing. The color, the fluidity, transparent/translucent quality plus the anticipation of seeing what comes out of the kiln makes glass fusing exciting and addictive to me. I am drawn to the colors of nature; the sand, sea, and sky; the greens of the flora and fauna, and the creatures that roam the oceans and shores. I also love reactions that are created by the natural elements found in colored glass. I enjoy making the glass appear as if you are looking into a watery pond, lake, or ocean. And the textures that can be created by a variety of techniques stimulates the imagination.
